As I sat in the waiting room waiting for my name to be called by the Eye Doctors assistant I glanced around the room and noticed all the couples who were waiting together. Most of them were not talking. They were on their phones. 

If she was sitting next to me, she would be wearing a neutral-colored winter jacket with a splash of purple somewhere on the sleeves. 

She would not be on her phone. 

She would be complaining about the snow that just started to get heavy about an hour again. She would tell me to shovel the snow when we got home so someone walking down our block would not slip and fall on the ice in front of our house. That person would of course eventually take us to court where the large settlement would cause her endless sleepless nights. 

She would make a comment about the ridiculousness of the snow when winter doesn’t officially start for four more days. 

She would tell me how later her sister and her mom were going shopping for something we really didn’t need but when you have a coupon AND it’s on sale you really can’t afford not to buy it. 

She would tell me to make sure I ordered the pies from Bakers Square, a French Silk, Banana Cream and a regular Apple Pie not the French Apple Pie, never the French Apple Pie. Why do they even have that god awful pie? 

There would be some silence as I learned back in my chair, my eyes closed, my fingers folded and diddling with each other. She would break the silence and ask me where she could get change for a twenty-dollar bill because she knew that person would be standing on the side of the road when we got off the expressway, his sign saying whatever those signs say. She was absolutely convinced he was not a homeless veteran and was scamming the public to buy alcohol and drugs but she could never NOT give him money but not twenty dollars, probably five. 

If she was sitting next to me I would tell her I miss her and her daughter really misses her. I would tell her she was a very good mom and that our daughter is a better woman because of her.
